JLPT Coverage
Everything you need to master kanji
Real handwriting practice, smart review scheduling, and bite-sized daily sessions.
Stroke-by-stroke tracing
Trace each kanji on screen and get instant feedback with haptic and audio cues. Learn the correct stroke order naturally, one line at a time.
Spaced repetition that adapts
Uses the proven SM-2 algorithm. Kanji you know well wait weeks. Kanji you struggle with come back tomorrow. Your brain does less work, remembers more.
All 2,133 Joyo kanji
Every kanji you need for JLPT N5 through N1 — organized by level so you always know what to study next. From beginner to mastery, it's all here.
Daily Dose sessions
Set a daily goal of 3-20 kanji. Each session takes about 3 minutes. Small, consistent practice beats marathon study sessions every time.
Meaning quizzes
Reinforce what you learn with multiple-choice recognition quizzes. Tracing builds muscle memory, quizzes build comprehension — together they make kanji stick.
Story-based mnemonics
Remember kanji through memorable stories. "Evening 夕 + mouth 口 = name 名 — in the evening it's dark, so you call out with your mouth." Over 80 custom mnemonics built in.
From first stroke to full mastery
Three minutes a day is all it takes. Here's how.
Set your daily goal
Choose 3-20 new kanji per day. The app serves them up one at a time in a swipeable feed — like scrolling through stories, but you're learning to write.
Trace each stroke
Draw on the screen and get instant feedback. Correct strokes light up green, wrong ones get another chance. Teach cards explain meanings, readings, and compounds before you trace.
Let spaced repetition do the rest
The app schedules reviews at the perfect moment — right before you'd forget. Kanji you know well wait weeks. Ones you struggle with come back tomorrow.

Everything you need to know about Kanji Studio
Is Kanji Studio really free?
Yes, completely. All 2,133 kanji, all JLPT levels, all features. No ads, no subscriptions, no hidden fees. Just download and start learning.
How does the tracing work?
You draw each stroke directly on the screen with your finger. The app grades your stroke in real time with haptic and audio feedback — green for correct, another chance if you miss. Stroke guides can be toggled on or off depending on your level.
What JLPT levels are covered?
All of them. N5 (79 kanji) through N1 (985 kanji) — that's every one of the 2,133 Joyo kanji organized by level so you always know what to study next.
How long does a daily session take?
About 3 minutes with the default goal of 5 kanji per day. You can adjust your daily goal from 3 to 20 kanji depending on how much time you have.
What is spaced repetition?
It's a learning technique that schedules reviews right before you'd forget. Kanji you know well wait longer between reviews, while ones you struggle with come back sooner. This means you spend time on what you actually need to practice.
Is it available on Android?
Kanji Studio is currently available on iOS. Android support is planned for the future.
Do I need to know any Japanese to start?
No. The app starts with N5 — the most basic kanji — and each character comes with teach cards that explain its meaning, readings, and example words before you trace.
How do the mnemonics work?
Each kanji is broken into its component parts, and a memorable story ties them together. For example: 名 (name) = evening 夕 + mouth 口 — "In the evening it's dark, so you call out with your mouth to tell someone your name." These stories make kanji meanings stick.
